The National Audit Office (NAO) warns that despite increased funding for local councils, financial pressures hinder their capabilities to provide early intervention services. Support from London Councils emphasizes the need for a collaborative, government-wide approach to improve councils' financial sustainability, especially given an anticipated funding shortfall of at least £500 million in 2025-26. The organization urges restoration of council funding to 2010 levels by 2028-29 to ensure effective early prevention investments, pointing out the dire need for a Spending Review that prioritizes local services after years of underfunding.
Boroughs want to invest more into early intervention and prevention because we know this brings the best long-term results for our residents. At the same time, council finances are under extreme pressure and many are struggling to keep their head above water.
Despite an increase in local government funding, it hasn't matched the growing demands and complexity of needs, limiting councils' capacity for early intervention.
