The London Assembly is calling for a review of crowd safety at Notting Hill Carnival, sparked by police fears of a mass casualty event due to crowd density. Susan Hall, chair of the assembly's Police and Crime Committee, highlighted serious incidents and raised doubts about the Metropolitan Police's capacity to ensure safety. The committee proposed strict guidelines for steward numbers and a review of crowd pinch points, noting the festival's significant cultural importance as it attracts around two million attendees. The need for action is critical, especially after two violent deaths at the previous event.
"We cannot stand by and wait for a tragic incident to happen, action must be taken," said Susan Hall, emphasizing the urgent need for improved crowd safety.
Assistant Commissioner Matt Twist acknowledged that while crime captures attention, he's most concerned about crowd density and its potential for a mass casualty event.
