Mayor announces extra funding to support London's domestic abuse victims
Briefly

London's mayor, Sir Sadiq Khan, announced a £6 million funding boost aimed at supporting survivors of domestic violence through grassroots community organizations. This funding will facilitate essential services including housing assistance, legal advice, and specialized therapy for children. With recent data showing that 2.3 million individuals experienced domestic abuse in the UK, Sir Sadiq emphasized the need for prevention and better reporting mechanisms, acknowledging past inadequacies in police responsiveness and the criminal justice system. The funding is part of a broader initiative that has already assisted over 23,500 survivors since 2021.
The key thing that we’ve all got to do is prevention. We want to stop somebody becoming the victim of domestic abuse and violence in the first place.
Often, a victim will go to their GP many times before they go to the police. In the past, the police have not been responsive to the victims of domestic abuse.
