'Making tower block even taller will overshadow green space'
Briefly

Regal London has acquired the site at 100 Avenue Road and intends to increase the number of flats from 184 to 236 while adding two additional stories. This initiative faces opposition due to concerns about overshadowing the nearby Swiss Cottage Open Space and the potential lack of affordable housing. Previous developer Essential Living had reduced affordable housing claims due to viability issues, stirring fears that Regal may follow suit. Local residents want assurance that development won't disrupt the community and keep homes accessible for local populations, especially against potential overseas buying influence.
"These tall buildings will throw huge shadow very early in the day over the whole green open space," said Elaine Chambers of the Winchester Road Residents' Association.
Alan Selwyn, of the Belsize Society, expressed concerns that Regal may also attempt to reduce the number of affordable homes, stating, 'That's really concerning as a block like this will not solve the housing problem.'
Tony Kay, a long-term resident, raised worries that the flats might be sold to overseas buyers, questioning accessibility for local residents who need housing.
Opponents of the development are seeking assurances over disruption and the availability of homes for local people, highlighting the community's concerns regarding the project.
