Locals protest south London university's plans for 'ugly' 29m tower next to village green
"He said building a 29-metre tower so close to Mill Street Green, opposite Middle Mill, would steal its light for hours each day and feel like losing something precious that can never be replaced. He said the green holds the heart of the neighbourhood, regularly hosting community events, and only exists because residents fought for it to be officially registered as a village green in 2006. He described how the idea that this community space could become darker, colder, less inviting, eroding what generations have created, genuinely breaks my heart."
"Chris Park, who lives next to the university, published an open letter to Kingston University Vice-Chancellor, Professor Steven Spier, warning of the disruption the proposed building would bring to the tight-knit community. Chris said the proposed tower would overshadow residents' homes and neighbouring schools including Kingston Forest School, which is based outdoors. He said families would be subjected to years of noisy construction traffic, which would disrupt their lives and clog narrow streets."
Locals surrounding Kingston University oppose plans for a 29-metre education tower at Knights Park, saying it would erode community life and overshadow a registered village green, nearby homes, schools and a rare chalk stream. The proposal would demolish Middle Mill student accommodation and replace it with a new education block containing a lecture theatre, student gallery, teaching studios, specialist arts and media facilities, a café and a public square. Residents warn of long-term loss of light and atmosphere on Mill Street Green, years of noisy construction traffic clogging narrow streets, and adverse effects on outdoor-based schools. The university says the tower would fit its surroundings.
