Leaders clash over closure of Woodford bridge that 'will cost 50m to repair'
Briefly

Since July 2023, the closure of Woodford bridge has significantly disrupted local residents, imposing lengthy detours while the council estimates the repair costs at £50 million. During a recent budget meeting, opposition members failed to secure a reallocation of community infrastructure levy (CIL) funds for the bridge's repair. Cllr Canal criticized the lack of progress after 18 months, while Cllr Rai pointed out the unpredictable nature of CIL funds. Additionally, Redbridge council approved a 4.99% tax increase, straining budgets further for its residents amid ongoing financial challenges.
Cllr Canal expressed frustration over the bridge closure, emphasizing that after 18 months of inspections, no substantial progress had been made in its repair.
Despite the opposition's attempts to redirect CIL funds for the bridge repair, the council stated that such funding sources are unpredictable and not guaranteed.
Cllr Rai mentioned the ongoing discussions with Transport for London and the Mayor's office, highlighting that multiple efforts have been made to find a resolution.
The Redbridge council's 4.99% tax hike, the maximum allowable without a public referendum, will increase the yearly tax burden on residents amid financial strain.
