Landlords may be forced to get licences in new rules to improve housing
Briefly

Hackney Council has initiated a 14-week public consultation on a new licensing scheme for private landlords aimed at improving tenant safety. The plan would mandate a five-year licence for most properties, establishing essential standards for management and maintenance. Mayor Caroline Woodley emphasized the proposal's urgency due to unacceptable living conditions faced by some tenants. With licence fees potentially reaching up to 1,400 for HMOs, the scheme seeks to cover its costs through fees and address significant hazards identified in privately rented homes, affecting up to 30% of HMOs.
Most landlords do the right thing but some of the conditions private tenants face are unacceptable and potentially dangerous, prompting the need for regulation.
The licensing scheme would allow us to regulate the majority of private rented homes and build a network of responsible landlords.
