Three firefighters from the London Fire Brigade have provided critical training to first responders in Malawi following Tropical Storm Freddy's devastating effects. In their two-week deployment, about 60 Malawian delegates learned various skills including search and rescue coordination, water rescue techniques, and treating flood victims. Ian Simpson, the brigade's ISAR coordinator, emphasized the importance of sharing skills to save lives. The training, conducted on Lake Malawi, aimed to enhance disaster risk management and strategic resource use amid increasing climate change-related disasters.
"It's a country accustomed to having lots of rain and cyclone seasons, but Cyclone Freddy was the longest-lasting tropical storm on record lasting for 36 days."
"We taught local agencies about disaster risk management but also how to be more strategic with resources when a disaster, like floods, hit."
