Extinct-in-the-wild chicks hatch at London Zoo
Briefly

Three Socorro dove chicks, species extinct in the wild since 1972, have hatched at London Zoo as part of a breeding program. Aimed at increasing their populations for future reintroduction to Socorro Island, the chicks are the offspring of pairs that arrived at the zoo in late 2024. With only about 180 Socorro doves remaining globally, careful breeding across institutions is crucial for the species’ recovery. The chicks are growing rapidly, and their feathers will transition from dusty brown to vibrant adult colors, demonstrating the zoo's commitment to conservation efforts.
"It’s a big step forward in our role to bring this species back from the brink of extinction," said Gary Ward, London Zoo's curator of birds.
"Each successful hatch is a major step forward for the Socorro Dove Project," noted Ward regarding the significance of the new chicks.
