The conflict at Hampstead Heath revolves around the ongoing practice of cruising, a historical gathering place for gay men dating back to the 19th century. Local campaigners have begun to push back against this tradition through signage and calls for dog walkers to reclaim the space. In contrast, gay rights activists argue that these campaigns perpetuate homophobia and threaten a vital community space. Demonstrations featuring provocative messages highlight the cultural significance of cruising for many queer individuals, as stated by activists advocating for their rights in the face of growing opposition.
These posters, whilst on the one hand they are ridiculously hilarious, they're also very dangerous and it's dangerous the culture that they perpetuate.
Cruising is often for people who don't have access to a community. It is a life-saving thing and a vital part of building a community for people who have none.
