David Hockney, the world's most valuable contemporary artist after the sale of a swimming pool painting for $90.3 million, is being celebrated with a new exhibition of his lesser-known early works. Art dealer John Kasmin recalls how he recognized Hockney's potential in the early 1960s, showcasing his pieces when they were priced as low as 5 pounds. This retrospective, âIn the Mood for Love: Hockney in London, 1960-63â, opens in May and aims to present works that have not been publicly displayed for decades.
Many of these [works] haven't been seen publicly in decades. Some of them were bought in the 1960s and have remained with their owners.
It wasn't difficult to sell them, Kasmin said. He was popular straight away. Iâm only three years older than him.
