"Last month, the station was granted Grade II-listed status by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport following advice from Historic England. An artist's impression of the scheme During a planning meeting on Tuesday evening, Southwark councillors were told the planning application before them was essentially a supplementary report to give special weight to the new listed status of the station."
"The Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS) previously reported on the proposals back in March, which will see the council homes built by Transport for London (TfL) in partnership with developer Helical plc, but owned and managed by Southwark Council. As part of the scheme, a payment of over 15.6 million will go towards providing additional affordable housing elsewhere in the borough. The student block will include en-suite rooms, as well as communal facilities such as a gym, a wellness room and events areas."
Plans will deliver 429 student rooms above Southwark Tube station, alongside a nine-storey social housing block and a new community hall on the Styles House estate. The Underground station was granted Grade II-listed status by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport following Historic England advice, and the planning application was reconsidered to give special weight to that listing. Planning officers stated the development was designed to respect the station and would not harm its setting or special significance, and Southwark Council’s Planning Committee granted permission again. Transport for London will build the council homes with developer Helical plc; Southwark Council will own and manage them. The scheme includes a payment of over 15.6 million toward additional affordable housing elsewhere, student communal facilities, and a mix of 44 council homes ranging from one- to four-bed units.
