"In early 2024, the City of London approved plans to demolish the 1970s Museum of London building and neighbouring Bastion House, and replace them with two offices and a larger public space. There was a study on how the existing building could be reused, but the developer says they came down in favour of demolishing the Museum of London and Bastion House buildings."
"The decision to approve the demolition is now set to be contested in the High Court by campaign group Barbican Quarter Organisation (BQO), which has been given permission to bring its judicial review claim to the High Court. The local campaign group plans to challenge whether the decision to approve the development followed the correct procedure and complied with environmental legislation and planning policy."
"This is a crucial moment for residents and for everyone who cares about London's heritage and climate commitments. We are delighted that the Court has recognised that our case is arguable and should now progress to a full hearing. BQO is very grateful to everyone who has supported this campaign. We would not be here without you. Your continuing financial support will help put a stop to this harmful project."
The City of London approved plans in early 2024 to demolish the 1970s Museum of London building and neighbouring Bastion House and replace them with two office buildings and an enlarged public space. A reuse study was carried out but the developer favoured demolition. Nearly 1,000 objections were submitted, over 800 from local campaigners and Barbican estate residents. Campaign group Barbican Quarter Organisation has been granted permission to bring a judicial review in the High Court. BQO intends to challenge the approval on procedural grounds and whether it complied with environmental legislation and planning policy. Demolition was slated to begin in 2028, with completion by late 2033.
