Amnesty International has established a new section, Amnesty International Hong Kong Overseas (AIHKO), in exile to advocate for human rights amid increasing repression in Hong Kong. Officially based in Switzerland and run by Hong Kong activists in the diaspora across various countries, the new office highlights resilience and continued commitment to human rights advocacy. Officials express that working from abroad will offer greater freedom to communicate and collaborate internationally, as the human rights situation in Hong Kong deteriorates under stringent laws imposed by the Chinese government since 2019.
Amnestyâs secretary-general stated that the new Hong Kong section demonstrates âthe resilience of our movement, our determination never to be silencedâ amid threats.
Fernando Cheung expressed that operating from abroad gives more freedom to speak out and connect with international bodies regarding worsening human rights issues.
