Romford rapper YT, a student at Oxford University, initially found success on SoundCloud with eclectic influences. His tracks demonstrated a playful blend of comedic elements and UK cultural references, culminating in the album #STILLSWAGGIN which enjoyed acclaim. His latest album OI! builds on this by incorporating jerk sounds and polished production. However, while it retains engaging beats, there's a noted decline in the witty, relatable lyrics that characterized his earlier work, replaced with more simplistic lines, indicating his evolving artistic direction.
What initially drew me into YT's music was its hyperspecific UK perspective, wrapped in a distinctly Zoomer brand of humor.
Now they're getting replaced with rudimentary lines like 'Mixed girl, black and white like panda' and some of that hyperlocal appeal is diluted.
