Concrete barriers installed on Portobello Road were intended to deter vehicle attacks. These barriers will be temporarily removed for the Notting Hill Carnival, which attracts around two million visitors. Road closures will still occur on market days, but temporary barriers will replace the concrete ones. The removal is in line with guidance from the Metropolitan Police and the Carnival's Safety Group, aimed at improving crowd safety during the large public event. The barriers will be reinstated after the event, and road surfaces will undergo repair work as needed.
Kensington and Chelsea Council confirmed that the concrete blocks will be temporarily removed for two weeks from Monday, while road closures will remain on market days between 10:00 BST and 16:00.
The event is one of the world's biggest outdoor celebrations and is expected to attract up to two million people to the Notting Hill area.
