World Cup will boost late-night travel, TfL says
The FIFA Men’s World Cup is expected to drive a surge in late-night travel across London, creating some of the busiest evenings on the Tube and bus network. TfL expects screenings, fan events, and extended pub opening hours to increase demand, with kick-off times varying widely across matches played in the US, Canada, and Mexico in June and July. TfL notes that London already saw some of its busiest weekends during the London Marathon and the final day of the Premier League season, estimating more than 5.8 million Tube and bus journeys on last Sunday. Demand is also expected to remain high during Arsenal’s victory parade and major concerts. TfL announced partnerships to provide travel advice at screenings and a new multilingual customer information service for the Elizabeth line launching in June.
"This summer's men's World Cup is expected to drive a surge in late-night travel across the capital, Transport for London (TfL) has said. The transport authority said screenings, fan events and extended pub opening hours could create some of the busiest evenings of the year on the network. TfL said the capital had already seen some of its busiest weekends of the year during the London Marathon and the final day of the Premier League season."
"Pubs can open beyond their usual hours around some matches, to take account of the wide range of kick-off times at the tournament, which is being played in the US, Canada and Mexico in June and July. Demand is expected to stay high throughout summer, including during Arsenal's victory parade on Sunday and major concerts across London. TfL also announced a partnership with BOXPARK and TOCA Social to provide travel advice at World Cup screenings."
"A new multilingual customer information service for the Elizabeth line will launch in June to provide live travel updates in 38 languages. Andy Lord, London's transport commissioner, said: "We've already seen the positive impact that major events like the London Marathon and the end of the Premier League season have on the city, and we expect this summer's FIFA Men's World Cup to bring the same energy to London with people coming together to support their teams.""
