Veeraswamy, the UK's oldest curry house with a history dating back to 1926, is in jeopardy of closing over a lease dispute with the Crown Estate. The Crown Estate plans to reclaim the restaurant's space to expand office facilities at Victory House. Co-owner Ranjit Mathrani expressed surprise at the sudden decision, revealing that just a year prior, the estate offered to expand the restaurant's space. A petition has been launched to request King Charles and the landlord reconsider and renew the lease due to its historical significance.
Without its own entrance, Veeraswamy has said it will not be able to operate and so, as part of the renovation, the space currently occupied with the restaurant will be converted into offices.
Ranjit Mathrani, co-owner of MW Eat, said the news came out of the blue, claiming that the previous year the estate had asked if he wanted to take more space in the building.
Veeraswamy has welcomed a number of famous faces through its doors, including Princess Anne, Lord Cameron and King Abdullah of Jordan.
The Crown Estate says it needs to reclaim the space to carry out a comprehensive refurbishment of Victory House, which would take place over 12 months.
