A fire triggered by an e-scooter caught fire in a Hither Green flat, causing three occupants to jump from the first floor to escape. The London Fire Brigade responded swiftly, with three engines and 15 firefighters on the scene. The fire heavily damaged the flat, blowing through an internal wall and out a bedroom window. It serves as a critical reminder about fire safety concerning lithium batteries in e-scooters, as noted by Fire Station Com Paul Meyrick, who emphasized the need to avoid blocking escape routes.
This fire is yet another example of why we are so concerned about e-bikes and e-scooters and why we're running our #ChargeSafe campaign to raise awareness of the fire risks associated with these vehicles.
It highlights the importance of never blocking an escape route with anything, including e-bikes and e-scooters.
Store them somewhere well away from a main through route. Our advice is to store these items in a safe location if possible, such as a garage or a shed.
The lithium batteries in the e-scooter are believed to have been the cause of the blaze.
