Transport for London (TfL) has decided to discontinue school bus route 654 despite significant opposition, with 85% of feedback expressing disagreement with the axing. The route primarily served Harris Academy Orpington, but TfL noted low usage rates of around 40 in the morning and 60 in the afternoon. It argues that similar routes, such as 353 and 664, can accommodate passengers, but opponents warn that this will lead to overcrowding and limit access for vulnerable students, impacting social mobility and educational opportunities.
TfL claims that withdrawing the 654 will therefore allow for better use of limited resources. Most passengers will be able to make the same journey on bus route 664 or 353.
Bromley councillor Josh Coldspring-White told TfL that the 353 is already overcrowded during school times and cannot handle additional demand.
