The annual Barking and Dagenham College skills show highlighted student talent with 60 competitions including an esports tournament and DNA extraction, featuring 32 participating organizations. College manager Zoe Richardson reported participation from 1,200 students who demonstrated skills to potential employers during masterclasses. Competitions featured various professions; lab technicians extracted vitamin C, catering students prepared meals for VIPs, and public service students conducted fire hazard simulations with a trained dog. Student feedback noted increased confidence and valuable experience in their respective fields, showcasing the diverse skill sets being nurtured at the college.
Budding lab technicians had to extract vitamin C from orange juice in the science lab. The contest was on to find what types of juice had the most.
This gave us the experience of science in practice.
We were nervous. I was serving food to VIPs but it ended up a fun time.
It was a good experience that helped build our confidence.
