WHSmith has decided to sell its UK high street chain in a deal worth £76 million, shifting its focus towards the more profitable travel retail sector. The high street operation, containing around 500 stores, represents only 15% of the group's annual trading profit. Once the sale to Modella Capital is complete, the stores will begin a transitional rebranding to TGJones. This strategic move is part of WHSmith's broader aim to enhance its travel retail business, which now accounts for a significant majority of its revenue and profit.
"As we continue to deliver on our strategic ambition to become the leading global travel retailer, this is a pivotal moment for WHSmith as we become a business exclusively focused on Travel."
"Our Travel business currently accounts for around 75% of the Group's revenue and 85% of its trading profit."
