Watch: Controlled explosion carried out on 83-year-old WW2 bomb in Co Down
Briefly

According to a number of reports on X, residents as far as Millisle and Donaghadee heard the bang. It is hoped that people can return to properties soon but the cordon is still in place so please refrain from doing so until confirmation is received from the PSNI.
PSNI Superintendent Johnston McDowell added: The munition found, which I can now confirm was identified as being an air-dropped SC-500 German bomb from World War Two...still posed a significant risk to public safety, even after all this time.
This was a highly complex operation that prompted the evacuation of a large number of homes within 400 metres... I would like to express my sincere thanks to all our personnel involved, who worked day and night this week to keep the public safe.
