Southwark Council plans to invest £1.7 million to replace the Canada Water Library's leaking mineral felt roof with metal, responding to 13 years of ongoing issues.
The council indicated that leaks from the roof not only caused the timber structure to rot but also led to cladding panels detaching, highlighting severe design flaws.
Portia Mwangangye emphasized the importance of libraries, stating, 'They are invaluable to our community, providing vital services and spaces for learning, connection, and support.'
The library, dubbed a 'super-library' upon opening, was designed by architect Piers Gough and aimed to be an innovative model for future libraries.
