Sadiq Khan: Heathrow expansion would undermine London's 'clean air' progress
Briefly

In response to Rachel Reeves' speech on boosting the UK's economic growth, Labour mayor Sadiq Khan reiterated his opposition to a third runway at Heathrow Airport. He highlighted the potential negative impact on air quality, carbon emissions, and noise pollution for Londoners. Khan called the area around Heathrow one of the most polluted in London, stressing that the project could exacerbate existing issues. He remained cautious regarding a legal challenge, mentioning the need to see Heathrow's full proposal while advocating for other growth initiatives that could benefit the city in the short term.
Let me be quite clear and unambiguous - I remain opposed to a third runway at Heathrow Airport. We've managed to improve the air in London because of our policies.
The numbers of people affected by noise from just two runways is more than the numbers of people affected by Paris Charles de Gaulle, by Munich, by Madrid, by Amsterdam airports - put together.
With a new runway, you would have shovels in the ground until at least the early 2030s; a new runway would not be completed for some considerable amount of time.
We're offering the Government policies that will get growth in this term, from the Docklands Light Railway extension... so I'm pro-growth.
