Hungerford Bridge, a 161-year-old railway bridge, will undergo extensive refurbishment until winter 2028 to ensure safety and preserve its Victorian heritage, according to Network Rail.
"Many of the bridges on Britain's railway are from the Victorian era and being responsible for this national heritage is both a privilege and a challenge... vulnerable to corrosion and damage from weather," said David Davidson.
Network Rail is investing £213 million over four years for the revamp of route structures, emphasizing the importance of maintaining old infrastructure for safe and reliable rail service.
"To avoid further disruption, we will also use barges to deliver and remove waste materials to Surrey Pier... to avoid creating extra traffic and the resulting pollution," Network Rail stated.
