Eight years after a man was found dead on Lake Huron, genetic genealogy led to the identification of Garnet Michael Nelson, who was on a canoeing expedition.
Garnet Nelson, originally from London, Ontario, set out to canoe thousands of kilometers home from Alberta, but tragically died before completing his journey.
The police investigation relied heavily on a northern Ontario publication article to identify Nelson, showcasing the importance of media in solving cases.
After years of uncertainty, 2023 testing confirmed that Nelson, found in 2016, was indeed the man last seen planning to canoe back home.
