M&S has just been given approval by communities secretary Angela Rayner to redevelop the store, which would include demolishing the three buildings it currently occupies and replace it all with a 10-storey mixed-use development, including a new flagship store and office space.
M&S chief executive Stuart Machin expressed delight at the approval after three years of delays, noting the project will support 2,000 jobs and aim to rejuvenate Oxford Street.
Conservation charity SAVE Britain's Heritage has responded negatively, insisting on 'urgent reform' of national planning policy to prioritize re-purposing historic buildings over demolition.
The refurbishment of the old art deco store was previously deemed unviable, with M&S stating they would have to cease trading there if refurbishment was pursued.
