The investigation has confirmed that a 14-year-old girl remains in hospital with potentially life-changing injuries after a substance, believed to be acidic, was thrown at her and a 16-year-old boy. Initial assessments indicate that while the boy's injuries are not life-threatening, the girl's condition may take time to fully understand. The school community is understandably shaken by the events, and authorities are working diligently to address the situation and ensure safety.
Detective Chief Inspector Dean Purvis stated, 'Officers were on routine patrol when they were flagged down to this terrible incident. From our enquiries, we believe the two young victims were on Alfred Road when they were approached by a lone suspect who threw a substance at them.' He emphasized the commitment to a thorough investigation to catch the assailant and ease community concerns.
The school staff response was commendable, with a teacher risking her own safety to provide first aid to the victims. ‘A member of staff bravely and selflessly rushed to provide first aid to the two victims, sustaining injuries herself in the process,’ remarked Purvis, highlighting the courage shown amidst a horrifying attack.
The suspect is described as a tall, slim, black male riding an e-scooter and wearing dark clothing that obscured his identity. Authorities stress the importance of community vigilance in reporting any suspicious activity that could aid the investigation.
