An inquest revealed that Peter Jones, a 68-year-old man, tragically jumped to his death from a phone booth in a police station after spending 18 hours in the public waiting area. He exhibited concerning behavior, such as rocking and talking to himself, which the police failed to notice. Coroner Mary Hassell blamed inadequate oversight at the station and a lack of reception staff, indicating this could lead to future tragedies. The court criticized the booth's design as facilitating the suicide, recommending immediate changes to prevent similar incidents from occurring again.
During his time at Stoke Newington Police Station, the CCTV shows that Mr Jones displayed sufficient behaviours to indicate that he was an immediate danger to himself which, if seen by police staff, would have resulted in action that probably would have prevented his death.
Ms Hassell also criticised the structure of the flat topped phone booth, saying Mr Jones would otherwise have had 'no means' to take his life in that way.
