Al Noor Ltd, a food company from Southall, has been fined for importing spices potentially contaminated with aflatoxins, carcinogens associated with liver cancer. The company failed to properly notify authorities about a spice shipment from Pakistan in May 2022, leading to insufficient checks. After an investigation revealed over half of the shipment was missing and had been improperly relabeled, the court imposed fines totaling nearly 13,000 on both the company and its director. Ealing Council emphasized the seriousness of obstructing food safety protocols, highlighting possible grave consequences for consumers.
Obstructing food safety officers is a very serious offence and is not taken lightly by the council. The consequences for the business' customers in this case could have been grave if council officers had not stepped in to enforce the law.
The shipment contained various high risk' spice mixes from Pakistan, which had been potentially contaminated with aflatoxins carcinogens linked to liver cancer. Consuming aflatoxins can be poisonous and life threatening.
