Local backlash as Southwark Council gym fees set to rise by 144 a year
Briefly

Gym-goers at Southwark Council's Seven Islands Leisure Centre are upset by a proposed annual membership fee hike of over one-third, set to take effect in the 2025/26 budget. The price increase from £31.99 to £43.99 a month has led to fears of reduced gym attendance. Many members expressed intentions to switch gyms unless improvements in facilities are made. While some members see value in remaining at the council’s centre compared to private gyms, others are wary of the increased costs without enhancements in service or facility quality.
Some gym-goers at Southwark's Seven Islands Leisure Centre expressed concerns over a 144 annual increase in membership fees, fearing it may drive them to switch gyms.
Vanessa, 62, stated, 'It's a huge amount of money. I think I might change my membership when it comes into place. It's too much.'
Luana, 48, commented on service quality, 'I think if the prices go up, they should really improve the gyms here. The state of the gyms is shameful.'
Simon Treacy noted the price comparison, stating, 'Relative to private membership, I still think it's a good deal. I would rather my fees go to the council.'
