The London Renters' Union has called on Labour MP Jas Athwal to resign after a BBC investigation revealed severe neglect in his rental properties, including black mould and ant infestations.
Mr. Athwal's flats were reported to have dirty communal areas, faulty lights, and loose fire alarms, with one tenant noting an ant infestation greatly affecting their child's health.
Hester Sullivan of the LRU emphasized that Athwal has broken laws on licensing and has discriminated against low-income renters by refusing to let properties to those receiving housing benefits.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer criticized the situation, highlighting its unacceptability regardless of the landlord's political affiliation and urged a higher standard for all landlords.
