Headteachers in 17 state secondary schools in Southwark, London are banning smartphones to tackle mental health concerns, screen addiction, inappropriate content, and theft risks for over 13,000 young people.
If a student uses a phone during the school day, traditional mobile phones are returned quickly, but smartphones are held for up to a week or until parents collect them, impacting students in Years 7 to 9.
