As a child, I accompanied my mother to buy ingredients for Nigerian dishes in Upton Park, known for its South Asian community. Black hairdressers intermingle among halal butchers, traditional English cafes, and Eastern European restaurants.
Chuku's, in Tottenham, offers Nigerian cuisine in a vibrant setting with shared plates like chin chin cheesecake and sauce-laden suya meatballs, bridging cultures and connecting the diaspora.
Founded by siblings of Nigerian and Grenadian heritage, Chuku's aims to introduce Nigerian dining to newcomers and provide a familiar space for diaspora members.
Ifeyinwa Frederick expressed, "We wanted a buzzy atmosphere that represented our vibrant and boisterous culture, showcasing the rich diversity and loudness of Nigerian heritage."
