The first UK case of the Clade Ib mpox virus variant has been detected in London, with the UK Health Security Agency assessing the risk to the population as low.
The patient had returned from Africa, developed flu-like symptoms after just over 24 hours, and subsequently a rash, indicating the progression of the mpox infection.
Following their visit to the emergency department, the patient was sent home to isolate while awaiting test results, highlighting the importance of monitoring and containment.
Initial tracing efforts identified fewer than 10 contacts from the household, as the UKHSA emphasized that mpox only spreads through close contact.
