Dangerous junction to get safety improvements
Briefly

The construction project at Lambeth Bridge is set to start soon, aiming to enhance safety by replacing dangerous roundabouts with signal-controlled junctions. Data indicates that the bridge's northern junction has the highest cycle collision rate in London, with cyclists involved in most incidents from 2021 to 2024. The upgrades will involve full and partial road closures, yet pedestrian and cyclist access will largely remain unaffected. Additionally, new cycle lanes and pedestrian crossings will connect to existing cycle routes, though increased traffic disruptions in the area are anticipated.
Work to improve safety at one of London's most dangerous junctions is due to begin at the end of the month. Roundabouts at either end of Lambeth Bridge are to be replaced with signal-controlled junctions.
According to data from TfL, Lambeth Bridge's northern junction is the most dangerous in the capital in terms of cycle collisions. From 1 September 2021 to 31 August 2024, cyclists were involved in 22 of the 31 collisions that happened at the roundabouts there.
The action will require a series of full and partial closures on the bridge. A southbound closure is scheduled for traffic between 10 February and 15 December 2025.
The work will also add a cycle lane on the bridge itself and new pedestrian crossings, connecting to the existing Cycleway 8 route on the north side of the bridge and Cycleway 5 on the south.
