Transport for London (TfL) has announced that the Blackwall Tunnel will close to southbound traffic from 11pm on Saturday until 5am on Monday. This closure is essential to facilitate necessary roadworks for the new Silvertown Tunnel, scheduled to open in 2025. The work cannot be safely conducted while traffic is still passing through. Additional overnight closures will occur on October 11 and 18, and TfL recommends larger vehicles avoid central London during this time.
To keep drivers informed, TfL is placing additional variable messaging signs on main roads leading to the Blackwall Tunnel, working in collaboration with third-party app providers like Waze. These measures aim to ensure that regular users of the tunnel are promptly notified of the southbound closure, which is crucial given the high volume of traffic typically encountered. This proactive approach demonstrates TfL's commitment to managing traffic disruptions effectively.
Bus route 108, which routes through the Blackwall Tunnel, will be temporarily split across the mentioned weekend, operating separately between Lewisham and North Greenwich, and from Canning Town to Stratford. Customers are advised to switch to the Jubilee Line to continue their journey over the river. TfL assures that those using the Jubilee line will automatically receive a refund for the Tube fare after the weekend, minimizing the financial impact on passengers during this period of disruption.
The Mayor's Hopper fare ensures that customers making additional bus journeys on the opposite side of the river won't incur extra charges, provided their trips start within a specified timeframe. This policy aims to enhance convenience for passengers affected by the weekend's transport changes while encouraging the use of public transportation through seamless integration across routes.
