TfL has announced that the southbound route will close from 11pm Friday to 6am Saturday for road layout adjustments ahead of the Silvertown Tunnel opening in 2025, with another closure from 11pm Saturday to 5am Monday. The new river crossing will charge drivers up to 4 during peak hours, significantly impacting traffic flow and expected delays in east and central London.
As drivers are redirected, the A13 westbound is anticipated to see long queues between Canning Town and Whitechapel, alongside increased congestion at alternative routes like the Rotherhithe Tunnel, while public transport options are encouraged to mitigate these disruptions.
Despite the anticipated traffic chaos due to the weekend closures of the southbound route, TfL urges passengers to utilize the Jubilee Line for travel with automatic refunds for journeys completed. Other services, including the Woolwich Ferry and bus routes, will adjust operations to maintain some level of connectivity.
TfL anticipates challenges during the closure periods, particularly for drivers in central London, who are reminded to check the Journey Planner and TfL Go app to facilitate their travel planning amid the expected heavy congestion.
