Last week I was on a packed train on my way into central London to meet a friend for a coffee when I received an email from a close relative: 'Could I ask a favour? I'm unable to speak over the phone due to serious throat pain caused by laryngitis.'
My first reaction was concern. I hoped they were OK. My second was an immediate desire to help as they are elderly and living alone.
