In Tower Hamlets, council officials said that around 1,500 pensioners will receive slashed Winter Fuel Allowance payments restored through cash payments from the Post Office, aimed at providing much-needed assistance during the winter months.
Tower Hamlets mayor Lutfur Rahman expressed concern for elderly residents facing the harsh winter, saying, "I've spoken with many elderly residents who are afraid of being forced to endure life-threateningly low temperatures this winter or make the impossible choice between heating and eating."
The local council aims to alleviate the impact of cuts in benefits by implementing Warm Hubs and promoting awareness for Pension Credit, which is estimated to leave 4,000 households without essential financial support.
Mayor Rahman emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, "We're restoring this vital lifeline for pensioners in Tower Hamlets... I urge other councils to follow our lead and call on the government to reverse the cuts to the Winter Fuel Allowance."
