Wout van Aert has been ruled out of the World Championships and will not race again this season due to a serious knee injury sustained in a crash.
Van Aert had been leading both the points and king of the mountains classification before his crash forced him to abandon the Vuelta.
Despite initial scans showing no fractures, further assessment revealed he would require intensive care and intravenous antibiotics to prevent infection.
After his premature exit, Van Aert aims for a cautious recovery before focusing on the next season, having previously shown strong form at the Vuelta.
