Racing Louisville FC forward Bethany Balcer announced her decision to step away from soccer to prioritize her mental health and personal well-being. Citing a loss of joy in the sport, Balcer expressed the need for change in her life. Her decision comes closely on the heels of Angel City FC's Sydney Leroux also taking a mental health break. Balcer's advocacy for mental health care among athletes is evident, and although she remains on the team's active roster, she hopes to eventually return to soccer with renewed passion.
"I've always preached that when soccer is no longer fun, and you don't find joy in doing it, something needs to change," she wrote in a post on her Instagram page.
"In due time, I'm confident I'll return to the field with a new passion and energy for doing something I love," Balcer wrote. "Until then, I'm gonna keep doing my best, for me."
