Lewis Hamilton achieved his first pole position as a Ferrari driver, edging out Max Verstappen in a thrilling qualification session at the Chinese Grand Prix. Just days after finishing 10th in his debut, Hamilton's lap time secured him the top spot for Saturday's sprint race. McLaren's Lando Norris, who had previously been leading the championship, faced difficulties, finishing well down the order. Hamilton expressed gratitude towards the supportive crowd and praised his team's performance, noting that improvements made since his last race helped him extract more pace from the car.
Firstly I want to say a big thank you to this amazing crowd we have today, said Hamilton. I didn't expect that result but I'm so happy and so proud.
To come here, to a track I love, Shanghai a beautiful place, the weather has been amazing and the car came alive from lap one.
The last race was a disaster for us and we knew there was more performance in the car but wasn't able to extract it.
Hamilton, whose six wins in China are more than any other driver, capitalised with a fine lap to kickstart his career at Ferrari after he finished only 10th on his debut five days ago.
