Olympique Lyonnais Féminin has announced a rebranding to OL Lyonnes, symbolizing their connection to Lyon and the identity of 'lioness.' Owner Michele Kang emphasized that this change is about more than just aesthetics; it aims to enhance the team’s prominence globally while fostering local ties. The women's team will move to new training facilities, designed specifically for female athletes. They will also primarily play at Groupama Stadium, enhancing community engagement by regularly hosting games at a major venue, addressing previously limited fan interaction opportunities. Kang's vision includes substantial renovations to support women's athletics.
The women's professional team would swap training facilities with the club's boys' academy, creating a performance center specifically designed for female athletes.
Going forward, the OL Lyonnes will play all games at Groupama Stadium, a venue that hosted the 2019 Women's World Cup final.
Kang expressed surprise that Lyon was only playing a majority of its games at a training center, stating that it's unfitting for the best team in the world.
This rebranding is not merely about a name or logo change, but signifies a deeper connection to the city of Lyon and the women's team.
