The United States has imposed new sanctions on Venezuelan judicial and election officials aligned with President Nicolas Maduro, citing their role in certifying a controversial election.
The US Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control has targeted officials in Venezuela's military and government, accusing them of promoting repression through intimidation and censorship after the electoral vote.
Despite the sanctions being described as 'decisive', many of the affected Venezuelan officials were already under previous US penalties, indicating ongoing pressure.
A senior US official remarked that the sanctions should lead Maduro's officials to reflect on their involvement in electoral fraud and acts of repression.
