During the SAG Awards, Jane Fonda delivered a passionate acceptance speech for her Lifetime Achievement honor, urging Hollywood to mobilize against political injustices as the country faces challenges under President Trump's potential second term. Drawing parallels to Hollywood's resistance during McCarthyism, she emphasized the vital role of narrative entertainment in fostering empathy. Fonda also celebrated the significance of unions, expressing her steadfast belief in their importance and strength as a community. Her speech inspired fellow actors to recognize their responsibility in current societal movements and to engage actively in resistance efforts.
What we actors create is empathy. Our job is to understand another human being so profoundly that we can touch their souls. And make no mistake, empathy is not weak or woke. By the way, 'woke' just means you give a damn about other people.
Today, it's helpful to remember, though, that Hollywood resisted. Have any of you ever watched a documentary of one of the great social movements - apartheid or civil rights or Stonewall - and asked yourself, 'Would you have been brave enough to walk the bridge? ' We don't have to wonder anymore. We are in our documentary moment. This is it, and it's not a rehearsal.
