Representative Maxine Waters and Senator Elizabeth Warren are challenging severe budget cuts by the Trump administration to fair housing initiatives. They argue that these cuts will foster a rise in housing discrimination, particularly against vulnerable communities. Their urgency is underscored by a letter signed by 108 Democratic members of Congress and recent lawsuits from local fair housing organizations against HUD. The proposed budget slashes could reduce funding for crucial fair housing programs and staff necessary for enforcing the Fair Housing Act, significantly jeopardizing protections against discrimination in housing.
Mr. Turner has also forecast that he will slash staff by 50 percent at the agency and by 77 percent at its Office of Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity.
We really are going to go backward, Ms. Waters said in an interview.
If housing discrimination is left unchecked, it will freeze more Americans out of a volatile housing market, Ms. Warren said.
The action comes on the heels of lawsuits filed last week against HUD and Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency by four local fair housing organizations.
