To determine participants' go-to firms, we asked two questions: 1) "Which law firms does your company engage for legal services?" and 2) "Please indicate the highest level legal work for which your company will engage the particular firm(s)." The levels of work were defined along a four-point scale: Cost-efficient, bulk tasks Routine matters High-value, complex matters "Bet-the-company" matters"
An eighth annual ranking identifies the Top Outside Counsel law firms most relied upon by clients. Approximately 550 in-house lawyers responded to a survey naming the law firms their companies engage and indicating the highest level of legal work each firm handles. The survey used four work levels: cost-efficient bulk tasks, routine matters, high-value complex matters, and "bet-the-company" matters. Firms received averaged scores across responses. The firms with the highest average scores were included in the Top Outside Counsel list, reflecting in-house perspectives on which firms handle the most critical legal work.
