Philippe Chagniot, a retired dentist, pleaded not guilty in San Francisco Superior Court to murder, arson, and weapons charges and postponed a preliminary hearing. Prosecutors sought detention, and the defense did not request bail at that time, so Chagniot remains jailed. He is accused of killing 58-year-old Eric Bigone on May 17 with a MAC-10 machine gun after lying in wait outside Bigone’s rented house since 2023. Prosecutors allege the attacker approached on a bicycle around 5 a.m., spray-painted security cameras, set a fire on Bigone’s car roof, and shot Bigone when he investigated. Surveillance and FLOCK cameras allegedly tracked the cyclist to a car and then to Chagniot’s Ingleside residence, where police found a machine gun, silencer, and high-capacity magazine. Authorities have not publicly disclosed a motive, and Bigone had complained to friends about landlord issues involving a planned sale and relocation costs.
